Integrative Water Science
for sustainable boreal wetland management
Adopting an integrative watershed-ecosystem science approach the McMaster University Ecohydrology Group examines the hydrological and ecological processes that underlie the structure and function of boreal wetland ecosystems. By examining the effects of drought and wildfire disturbance we are developing novel approaches to quantify ecohydrological resilience in boreal peatlands and rock barrens wetlands and vernal pools. Using this resilience framework we are developing innovative ecosystem adaptation, species at risk habitat restoration and watershed reclamation strategies to mitigate the impacts of wildfire, land-use change and mining in these sensitive moss dominated wetlands.
